Failed Culvert Forces Major Repairs Beneath the Highway

If you’re driving near Lacey, expect a long detour. State Route 510 remains fully closed between Old Pacific Highway Southeast and Rockcress Drive Southeast after crews discovered a failed culvert beneath the roadway on April 24.

The culvert, located about 20 feet underground, became blocked and ultimately collapsed. To fix it, crews will need to excavate both sides of the highway, remove the damaged culvert, and install a new one — a process that could take several weeks.

The Washington State Department of Transportation hasn’t given a firm reopening date yet. In the meantime, drivers should plan ahead and use alternate routes.

We’ll keep you updated as the work progresses.
